Helms Ferry

One of the last operating ferries in East Tennessee, this ferry connects portions of Union County that are separated by the Powell River. Prior to the building of Norris Dam, many small communities along the Clinch and Powell rivers were dependent on ferries to transport across individuals across the rivers.  Later bridges replaced many of these ferries, but Helm's ferry remains the only access for residents to cross the Powell River.  The ferry operates daily, but is dependent on weather conditions.  The Helm's Ferry is located in the Sharps Chapel Community.

How to Get There

From Knoxville, take SR33 North across the HWY 33 Bridge. Take the first left onto Sharps Chapel Road.  Turn right onto Leadmine Bend road.  Follow to Stiner's Road and look for the sign for the ferry on the right.

Beautiful drive on Sharps Chapel and over Speedwell. Enjoyed the trip. Not the ferry from Belgium to Dover.

The Ferry was awesome but the signage to get there and even the locals couldn't tell you directions to get there. We were on big cruisers and not the best road either, but all was fun and going to do it again.
