War Comes to Dalton Driving Tour

Audio Driving Tour about Civil War Battle Sites in and around Dalton, Georgia. CD's and map guides may be purchased for $15.00 at the Tunnel Hill Heritage Center or the Dalton Freight Depot.

Dalton was the stepping off point for the Union Army's Atlanta Campaign. See sites where Sherman used his superior numbers of almost 3-to-1 to hold the southern army in place while he sent his third army to encircle them at Resaca.

Begin the tour at the Historic Western & Atlantic Tunnel that was completed in 1850. Tunnel Hill was the scene of many Civil War skirmishes as each army attempted to get control of the railroad tunnel. Also, see the Clisby Austin House—the headquarters for General William T. Sherman. It was at the Clisby Austin House that Gen. Sherman completed his plans for the Atlanta Campaign. Also on the tour are Buzzard's Roost Gap, Dug Gap Battle Park, Crow Valley, Hamilton Mountain, Western & Atlantic Railroad Depot in Downtown Dalton, West Hill Cemetery, and the Resaca, Georgia Battlefield and Cemetery.
