Big Ridge Small Wild Area Trail

Big Ridge Small Wild Area Trail is located off TVA's Chickamauga Dam, about 10 miles northeast of Chattanooga. TVA protects this area because it is an old growth forest that includes several species of oaks, yellow poplar and shagbark hickory. Old growth forest means the plant community has survived for many years without outside disturbances (logging, intrusion of non-native species, human manipulation, etc.) and is exhibiting natural ecological turnover. The trail offers many wildlife viewing opportunities including wild turkeys, deer, red fox and turtles.

How to Get There

Near Chickamauga Dam, this trail can only be accessed from the main trail at Greenway Farm on Gann Store Road in Hixon TN.,-85.22515/@35.1129278,-85.2242787,17z

How do you get to the trail? Where is the parking area?

This trail can’t be accessed from the road, even though there is a road and an unused parking area adjacent to the trail. You have to go to Greenway Farms, and the trail shoots off the main greenway. It's called the Boyscout Trail apparently. This access point has been closed for years due to the construction of the lock and various laydown areas associated with the Chickamauga Lock Project. It is unclear if it will be opened in the future. For now, the TVA small wild area can be accessed by foot from the North Chickamauga Creek Conservancy trail head or by the water access points along the North Chick waterway.
