Chilhowee Park Mural

Located in Chilhowee Park, this mural is located on the wall near the main entrance of the park at Beaman Street and Magnolia Avenue. Artist Brandon Donahue created this work through funding of the East Tennessee Foundation, Tennessee Arts Commission Place Making Grant and the First Tennessee Foundation. The Arts and Culture Alliance and the Knoxville Public Arts Committee also supported this art project.

Donahue selected key elements to represent the park's history to the present-day. Among them were a streetcar that ran from downtown to the park beginning in the 1890s, a replica of the pavilion that is constructed of local marble, and a dreamcatcher in homage to Native Indians. The background is of the Smoky Mountains to unite the elements. Donahue inscribed the center stone of the mural with the original title of the park -- "The South's Most Beautiful Playground."

The collaborative effort to create this mural was led by a public-private partnership including the neighboring communities of Parkridge, Chilhowee, Williams Creek, Burlington, Beaman Lake and Holston Hills. . All involved wanted to create an appealing landmark to help people appreciate the history of the park. "Chilhowee Park is one of Knoxville's most recognized landmarks. It holds a very rich part of Knoxville's history beyond East Knoxville."

City officials conducted a dedication ceremony Friday, Sept. 9, 2016.
