Coal Creek OHV Area

Off highway riding at its best!  With 72,000 acres, the Coal Creek OHV Area is the largest OHV area in the southeast.  Trails are open 365 days a year to all types of off-highway vehicles such as 4x4s, ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, Jeeps, rail buggies and mountain bikes.  Events are held all through the year at the OHV area.  Some of these events include the Coal Creek OHV Area Spring and Fall Jamborees, OMA Winter Nationals, Jeep Jamboree, Trail Fest, Woodsbuggy Hill Climbs and the Hummer Club Event, just to name a few.  These event provide lots or riding experiences as well as spectator fun and activities for kids!

Location:  The Coal Creek OHV Area is nestled in the hills of East Tennessee in the town of Oliver Springs.  It is roughly 38 miles from Knoxville, TN.  There is a wind farm on Buffalo Mountain which is visible from some of the ATV trails.  All four seasons can be experienced in this quiet mountainous area.

Seasons Open:  365 days a year!

Trail Difficulty:  There are Easy, Moderate and Extreme trails with difficulty levels for all riders. 

Trail Distance:   There are currently over 250 miles of trails to experience! New trails are being opened every year!

Lodging:   There are many local hotels in Oak Ridge and bed & breakfast areas as well as Windrock Park which is a campground located on the Coal Creek OHV Area.  For more information, please visit

Trail Rules and Restrictions

Each person, no matter their age or activity, must have a Land Use Permit to enter upon the Coal Creek property.  For a complete list of costs of permits and rules associated with the permit, please visit

Trailhead Access and Parking

The Windrock Trail Head is located on Windrock Road in Oliver Springs.  The parking lot has great access and trails leave directly from this parking area.  Security guards can be found along the main trails, gravel roads and monitoring the parking area.

Can’t wait to get up there to do some riding live on the TN/AL line in middle of the state but we got some great riding down here at West point over 5000 thousand Acres of riding here but I would like some different looking riding for a change so going to try and get up there this year hope to see y'all soon

I rode here when I lived in Knoxville. Going back with my son to stay for a week just to RIDE HERE!! There is no place like it. It's the best trail riding anywhere.

Went this past weekend 3rd time here and got to try out my new winch (twice) on a black diamond trail with my honda 1000. Now I need to install trail armor before my next visit in the spring. No better place to go in east TN you wont be sorry you made the trip.
