Interests and Areas of Expertise
Writing about the people and places of the Tennessee River Valley is both a joy and a responsibility. With hiking, shoreline and water galore, the Valley is the best summer camp in the world. And we share this experience with visitors from around the world. However, as we enjoy the lakes and the trails, we also need to remember to be good stewards. Only through consistent environmental stewardship education will those treasures be available for future generations. It's a delight to write about the Valley and encourage others to come. But the real joy is leaving Mother Nature's Playground better than I found it...every time.
Living in a town named Paris, it only makes sense that one of my favorite places is Eiffel Tower Park. With a playground, walking trails, swimming pool, tennis courts and more, it's perfect for all ages. And for fishermen, it even has a trout pond that's stocked in the winter months. Don't miss the 66' Eiffel Tower that puts on an impressive show at night, worthy of, well, Paris - The City of Lights!
Each summer, the people of Rhea County in Dayton, Tennessee host a festival that recreates a piece of local history, the points of which are still being discussed nationally. The Scopes Trial Festival celebrates the famous "monkey trial" that took place in the county courthouse in July of 1925. This "play with music" is well-performed and fascinating. To make the experience even better, the "theater" is the very courtroom where the trial played out. Add to this a friendly town, a bluegrass festival, delicious food, interesting vendors, a nearby state park, a car show, a walking tour, a fabulous museum and gorgeous scenery and you have a festival that is not to be missed.
