Only two-miles from downtown Knoxville, the Knoxville Urban Wilderness presents a unique urban playground for hikers, mountain bikers and trail runners! Thirty-five miles of natural surface trails connect five parks and natural areas with public and private lands to create an unparalleled outdoor venue! The 11.5 mile main loop connects Ijams Nature CenterForks of the River Wildlife Management Area, William Hastie Natural Area, Marie Myers Park and Anderson School with trailheads and parking along the route. The main loop offers easy to moderate trails for all users and the additional 24 miles of secondary trails accommodate users from beginner to advanced on dozens of trails of varying terrain.

ADA Accessibility Notes

The Will Skelton Greenway begins at Island Home Park, winds through Ijams Nature Center  before it  terminates at Forks of the River Wildlife Management Area. This 3.6 mile paved greenway is ADA accessible.  however there are a few short hill sections. The Serendipity Trail and Universal Trail at ijams Nature Center are paved pedestrian only ADA accessible trails. Together they are approximately 0.5 miles in length.

How to Get There

Trailhead Parking and Directions:

Ijams Nature Center main entrance:  2915 Island Home Ave, Knoxville, TN - Take I-40 to the James White Parkway and cross the river. Take the Sevier Ave/Hillwood Drive exit and turn left onto Sevier Ave which becomes Hillwood Dr. At the end of Hillwood, turn right onto Island Home Ave then take the 1st left to stay on Island Home Ave. Ijams will be approximately 1-mile on the left.

Mead's Quarry entrance: 3518 Island Home Pike, Knoxville, TN - Continue south on Island Home Ave which becomes Island Home Pike. After the railroad tracks, turn right into the parking area for the quarries and trails.

William Hastie Natural Area: end of Margaret Road - Take I-40 to the James White Parkway and cross the river. Take the Moody Ave exit (last exit) and turn left onto Sevierville Pike. Go approximately 2 miles and turn right onto Margaret Road, which dead-ends at the park.

Anderson School: 4808 Prospect lane - Take I-40 to the James White Parkway and cross the river. Take the Moody Ave exit (last exit) and turn left onto Sevierville Pike. Go approximately 2.4 miles and turn left onto Centeroak Dr and take the 1st left onto Prospect Rd. School is on the right.

Forks of the River WMA: 3140 McClure Lane - Take I-40 to the James White Parkway and cross the river. Take the Sevier Ave/Hillwood Ave exit and turn left. At the end of Hillwood Dr turn right onto Island Home Ave and then take the 1st left to stay on Island Home Ave. Pass Ijams Nature Center on the left, cross the railroad tracks then take a left onto McClure Lane. Go approximately 0.5 miles and parking will be on the right.
