North Pole Stroll

Each year, Big Spring Memorial Park in Athens, Ala. is transformed into a holiday spectacle for a month of free festive fun. The North Pole Stroll is an annual celebration of beautifully decorated Christmas trees placed in downtown Athens for all to enjoy, and one night only during the month-long event, Santa makes an appearance to spread holiday cheer and to visit with children.

The North Pole Stroll is open to the public daily December 1-30 until midnight for locals and visitors to stroll among the festival of trees and enjoy the lights and holiday decorations. On December 15th, from 5 to 7 p.m., Santa Claus makes an appearance for an evening of Letters to Santa. Children are invited to bring their Christmas wish list and after Santa has met with all of the good boys and girls and each child has their photo opportunity with the jolly old man, Santa rallies everyone together for a reading of “Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

The seven-foot beautiful Frasier Fur trees, provided by Lowe’s of Athens, are decorated by members of the community, local businesses and civic groups. One of the conditions for the décor is to keep it as green-friendly as possible by using solar LED lighting. Trees can have themes that match the sponsor’s mission or they can be uniquely designed.

The prestigious Southeast Tourism Society has named the North Pole Stroll a Top 20 Event in the Southeast for December 2018. Travel industry experts select 20 events per month from twelve states, and STS publicizes them throughout the United States. Founded in 1983, STS is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and development of tourism to its 12 member states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
