Phase 2 of the South Chickamauga Greenway is one more step in the City of Chattanooga’s goal to one day connect neighborhoods from East Ridge to downtown Chattanooga. Phase 2 was completed in two sections for a total of 3.5 miles from the Hawthorne Street Trailhead to the Faith Road Trailhead. Segment one extends from the existing asphalt greenway trail at the west end of the Water Haven Subdivision and continues west to North Hawthorn Street and includes .4 mile trail and one railroad pedestrian underpass. This entire segment includes an elevated boardwalk with no harm to wetlands or streams. Section two extends from the trailhead at Sterchi Farm off Harrison Pike to a new trail head at Faith Hill Road. This segment includes 2.2 miles of asphalt and an elevated boardwalk trail including one creek crossing by bridge at Bonny Oaks Drive and two railroad pedestrian underpasses.
The newest sections of the Greenway run adjacent to the creek following the natural contour of the land as much as possible with the distance of the creek’s bank ranging from approximately 10 to 35 feet. No landscaping, lighting or irrigation systems are along the greenway in an effort to maintain the natural appearance of the South Chickamauga Creek. Other than piers that support boardwalks, no other impacts to wetlands took place.
